The Porsche 911 - And 3 Cars That Could Take Its Crown

$
0
0
In the past 50 years that Porsche 911 has been on the market, many have attempted to take it on, but only a handful has so far come close to halting its dominance.

The primary factor in the 911’s continued success has potentially been its capability to evolve while still holding onto the traditions it was born with back in 1963. The car’s shape and styling has broadly stayed very the same, only getting bigger as aerodynamics took precedence, while the engine has remained very much at the rear.

While the 911 Turbos, GT2s and GT3s of this world have usually enjoyed the most attention from adorning fans of the Porsche brand, the Carrera GTS has always looked to be the pinnacle of the ‘standard’ 911 range. The latest embodiment of the GTS, like some have already mentioned, looks to bridge the gap between the Carrera S and the GT3 with 424bhp, a ride height 10mm lower than the S and driving dynamics to really get the juices flowing.

So who’s out there to ruffle Porsche’s feathers? Well, it’ll take something pretty special to worry the Stuttgart firm; but, another name from the German city is out to impress, while a British number has already begun to steal some hearts and another is on its way to join the battle next year.

Mercedes finally enters the ring

Taking the reins from the wonderful SLS, the Mercedes-AMG GT is arguably a car that the manufacturer has needed for years; a model that can position Mercedes in a place in the market where they have never really featured.

Split into two variants, the AMG GT S and its 510bhp will happily be going to war with the 911 Turbo, but the entry-level GT is aimed towards the Carrera’s line of fire; both make use of Mercedes’ new 4.0-litre turbocharged V8 and are priced at £97,195 and £110,495 respectively.

Not only do such price tags signify something a scale down from the lairy SLS, but also, an extra dose of practicality and a more useable powertrain show that Mercedes wants to have an everyday sports car in its range.

Gone are the extravagant gullwing doors and brought in are frameless front-hinged openings complete with a compact fastback body design. Even the boot opens to 350 litres of room.

The AMG GT has received Mercedes’ revised dual-clutch seven-speed gearbox and initial reflections have been massively positive, with the transmission’s response times brought down to a minimum and finally gives the German firm a chance to stand up to its sporty rivals on such a factor. The ‘box sits traditionally at the rear to aid balance, and with the engine hanging over the front axle, the GT has a weight distribution of 47:53 front to back. Power-to-weight ratio for the GT, meanwhile, matches that of the Lotus Exige S.

First reviews for the AMG GT have been very favourable and early signs indicate Mercedes could be onto a winner.

Unleashing the big cat

Most people who have laid eyes upon the Jaguar F-type since its release last summer have immediately fallen for its sleek curves. Arguably the best looking Jag since the E-type, the British marque’s much needed sports car already had a rather potent model in the V8 S, but the arrival of the coupe saw the introduction of the R variant.

Armed with 542bhp, the R Coupe is a car with some real muscle, and perhaps most importantly, having a permanent roof has increased the F-type’s structural rigidity by a whopping 80 per cent. Such a change has meant that the F-type is now completely monocoque in nature, a trait shared with the likes of the McLaren 650S and the Alfa Romeo 4C.

Of course, the addition of such strength in the chassis can only mean good things, with the F-type R Coupe a cut above the roadster in terms of driving dynamics, added precision in the corners, enhanced agility and greater body control. New 20-inch wheels and larger steel brakes also help, while ceramics are on the options list.

The F-type R Coupe covers the 0-62mph dash in 4.0sec dead thanks to the supercharged 5.0-litre V8; the eight-cylinder roadster manages 0-100mph in under 9.0sec, so with an extra 53bhp, you can imagine the pace of the coupe to thoroughly out-do its roofless sibling.

Being a luxurious coupe, the R doesn’t need to be driven at ten-tenths to be enjoyed and could easily be regularly used throughout the year, while always having that capacity to raise hell.

McLaren ready to shake it up

Set to be fully revealed in mid 2015, McLaren will enter the fray with its Sports Series range that will eventually consist of a coupe, roadster and a track-focused model.

Not a great deal is known about the car that will square up against the 911, as well as the Audi R8 and Ferrari California. We’ve seen a single teaser image of the car that will sit below the 650S and looks to be a smaller version of the 458 rival that is expected to cost in the region of £125,000 – a fair chunk more than Porsche’s equivalent.

Also anticipated but not confirmed is the use of the 650S’ twin-turbo V8 for the Sports Series range, an engine also utilised in the flagship P1, but to what level of tune is yet to be disclosed.

If the 650S is anything to go by, this new batch of cars should have the metal to compete with its contemporaries at a technical level; although, that hefty price tag could let McLaren down if it wants to compete on a larger scale of production.

How to Improve Your Fuel Consumption and Your Driving Habits (Infographic)

$

Improving your fuel economy requires more than installing the latest upgrades and slowing down on the motorway. In order to really cut down costs and maximise your outgoings you need to completely change your attitude towards driving.

As the driver of a heavy vehicle you are the problem. While vehicle age and road conditions are certainly a big factor, your driving habits hold the biggest influence over your fuel consumption.

Simply making a few eco-friendly changes could significantly reduce your overall running costs, which will have a positive impact on both your bank account and the environment. Truck Locator have compiled a detailed infographic titled The Trucker’s Guide to Fuel Efficiency. This guide has been designed to help drivers realise just how much damage they’re causing.

Here is the infographic:

Trucklocator Fuel Efficiency Guide

Monitor Your Activity

Before you begin making new fuel efficient changes, start off by taking a few notes regarding your current rate of fuel consumption. This will help you pinpoint where you’re going wrong in the future. While this step isn’t crucial, it’s always nice to know how much you’ve saved. Record the amount of money you’ve spent topping up your fuel tank along with your current mileage, and then re-record the results every time you need to re-fuel taking both changes into account.

Start with the Basics

Before you invest any cash in expensive gear such as fuel mizers and topographical sat navs, start by giving your vehicle a weekly tune up. Test the psi in your tyres to make sure they’re at the correct level (and make adjustments depending on your load), make sure you have the right amount of oil in your tank, clean your spark plugs, and check your filters.

Prepare Yourself

Before you hit the road check the weather conditions. Take a map with you or set your GPS to ensure you don’t get lost and use up any unnecessary fuel. Preparation is one of the most overlooked aspects of fuel efficient driving as knowing where you’re going and what to expect can significantly influence your driving habits.

Slow Down

Relax and slow down. According to the Truck Locator infographic driving 56mph instead of 50mph will increase your fuel consumption by around 22%, so keep a watchful eye on your speedometer. But slowing down doesn’t just apply to speed, try to slow down and smoothen your gear changes as well. Poor clutch control is one of the most common bad habits, yet it’s without a doubt the easiest to change. Accelerate smoothly by combining gentle low gear changes with fast high gear changes. In addition, always remain vigilant and try to pre-determine stopping distances.

Other Tips

Air conditioning and temperature will significantly affect your overall fuel consumption. Warm up your truck before you start driving by leaving the engine on for a few minutes. If it’s too hot when you’re driving slowly, open a window. Only use the air con if you’re driving at high speeds. This alone could decrease your fuel consumption by 10%. Adjust your load accordingly and take drag into consideration. If you have any unnecessary equipment on your truck such as headache racks or bully bars, just get rid of them altogether.

Truck Locator’s infographic will show you where you’re going wrong and give you a few pointers on how to improve your driving habits. Take all of the advice on board and don’t forget to monitor your data. The only way to truly understand the benefits is to have that all important final figure in front of you.

Want To Make Your Car Go Faster? 10 Ways To Enhance A Cars Performance

$

0
We love cars, hence why we have this cool cars blog to share our passion.

One of the most popular questions we are often asked is what can you do to make your car go faster. Well, to help answer this, here are 10 tips to enhance you cars performance:

1. Install An Air Induction System

Your car gets its power by mixing air with fuel, and then burning it to produce horsepower. The more cool and dense air that your engine can pull in, the more power it will produce, and the faster your car will drive. An air induction system allows the engine to pull in more cool air. This system is bolted directly onto the car and can be installed in one afternoon.

2. Upgrade To An Electric Fan

The fan is needed to draw air through the radiator to keep your vehicle's engine cool. Most older cars come with a mechanical fan that uses the engine's power and a fan belt to run. These fans draw in a significantly large amount of horsepower from the engine, which will prevent your vehicle from driving faster. Replace the mechanical fan with an aftermarket electric fan to free up some of that horsepower so you can drive your car faster.

3. Upgrade Your Carburetor

A carburetor mixes gasoline and air together so it becomes a vapor that can be burned inside the engine. It's typically found on older vehicles. Newer cars and trucks are equipped with fuel injection, and don't have a carburetor under the hood. A great way to increase the speed of your vehicle is to upgrade from a 2-barrel carburetor to a 4-barrel carburetor. When you make this upgrade, you'll also have to install a new intake manifold. It can be a little expensive to make this upgrade, but the increase in speed will be very noticeable.

4. Convert To An Electric Fuel Pump

Mechanical fuel pumps are known to rob power from a car's engine, thus not allowing a vehicle to reach it's optimum speed. When you convert to an electric fuel pump, more power will reach your drive wheels and your car will go faster. Keep in mind that an electric fuel pump and fan will draw extra power from your batter and alternator, so you'll want to upgrade those also.

5. Tune the Racechip

Tuning the racechip in your vehicle will make it accelerate faster, provide safer overtaking, and has a more direct response as you maneuver your car. When the Racechip is removed, all the software remains in place but there is no evidence left behind.

6. Convert To Fuel Injection

If you have a 4-barrel carburetor but your car still isn't fast enough, you can always upgrade to fuel injection. Since fuel injection is electronic and not mechanical, it is more precise. Your car will have better fuel economy and your car's engine will have more horsepower.

7. Improve Exhaust System Efficiency

The way exhaust leaves your vehicle's engine is just as important as getting more air and fuel into the engine, when you're looking at ways to increase performance and speed. One thing you can do is replace the exhaust manifolds with “Headers” to improve the weakest link in the exhaust system. Don't install a second tail pipe on your car unless you also install a second catalytic converter. The only way to see better performance is to have a true dual exhaust system. Just make sure you check with the local laws because most areas have rules governing the amount of noise a vehicle can produce. These laws include specific information about removing catalytic converters.

8. Install A Turbo Charger

Turbo chargers are stock on most diesel engines, but they can also be used on gasoline engines to improve performance. This upgrade will also require you to modify the exhaust system and air intake system, so it can get pricey and can be time consuming.

9. Add Nitrous Oxide To Your Air And Fuel

Adding nitrous oxide to the air and fuel mixture inside your car's engine makes it more explosive and significantly increases horsepower. You can get a NOS system for any type of car or truck. If you're looking a big punch, then choose a NOS system that has several different points that inject nitrous oxide into the intake manifold. Make sure you are familiar with the laws surrounding nitrous oxide in your state.

10. Install A Supercharger

A supercharger compresses the air fuel mixture to make it denser, and then basically shoves it down the engine's throat. The installation of a supercharger will instantly add a huge amount of power to your engine in an instant. They also look pretty impressive, since traditional superchargers stick out of the hood. There are several different types of superchargers to fit all types of engines. Some are so powerful, they can only be used on V-8 engines. Today, there are even low-profile superchargers that stay nicely tucked away under the hood. There are many laws surrounding superchargers, so make sure you can legally install one in your vehicle before you buy one.

8 Most Wanted Saloon Cars of 2014

Despite the economic gloom car manufacturers have not been downhearted. With a view to better times for all, they are bringing to the new car market an increasing number of premium saloon cars designed to enhance any driveway.

Such is the selection of comfortable, mile-eating, efficient and well equipped cars on offer, it can be difficult to sift through all the facts to make the right choice, especially when they all offer low running costs and the latest in safety and infotainment technology.

Whether for smart business use, practical family matters or just as a conversation starter at the Nineteenth Hole, these cars will fit the bill. Making an informed, balanced decision that is going to be right first time can be hard which is why we’ve featured here what we believe to be the pick of the premium crop. To help make the decision even easier we compare the same important factors across the selection.

1. Audi A6

How about the Audi A6 2.0L Ultra SE S-Tronic? The interlinking four rings assures buyers that they will find upmarket cars with high quality, comfortable interiors and smart design. Add to the mix a selection of frugal engines and it is hard to deny the pull of the brand. The A6 comes in various trim levels but even looking at the entry level SE model the sleek Audi gets a whole host of equipment as standard. Leather, obviously, dual-zone climate control, sat-nav, Bluetooth and DAB radio plus a capacious 530L boot. All the basics you would expect in a premium car.

Add to that a refined 2.0L 187bhp diesel engine driving through an automatic seven-speed gearbox and economy is covered. Audi quote an official fuel consumption figure of 64.2mpg and a miserly 114g/km of the nasty stuff. With a large 73 litre fuel tank garage stops will be few and far between. The economy is enhanced by the use of ‘Ultra’ technology utilising lighter materials in construction and all for £32,515.

2. BMW S5 Series

Sticking with the German brands, BMW offer their tried and tested S5 Series. When launched in 2010 it was described as “the most complete executive saloon on the market.” Four years on and nothing’s changed. This is a car that balances onroad performance with travelling comfort to deliver a complete package for the premium car driver. It’s a BMW so it is great to drive whilst still fitting the bill for everyday needs.

In 520d form, an entry level SE model offers a 520L boot, parking sensors and all the standard kit mentioned above. Again driving through an auto ‘box the 5 Series has 190bhp yet achieves 68.9 miles for your gallon and maintains a low VED 109g/kmof CO² emissions. Impressive stuff.

3. Jaguar XF Saloon

Back here in dear old Blighty our home-grown Jaguar marque is back to its very best and their premium offering in this sector comes in the shape of the XF saloon. With this car the Big Cat brand have found the perfect balance of design and technology enhanced by a boot capacity of 540L.

The interior is both stylish and comfortable with the added pleasure of seeing the rising command dial at every start-up. The frugal engine choice would be the 2.2L diesel engine as it offers the right balance between the two important factors, performance and economy. There’s an ample 157bhp on offer and Jaguar reckon you should get nearly 58 miles to the gallon with emissions of 129g/km. £31,495 will get you the SE Business trim with sat-nav, 17-inch alloy wheels, part leather upholstery, climate control, seven-inch touch-screen for the CD stereo, Bluetooth, digital radio and MP3 connection all in the price.

4. Infiniti Q50

Over to the Far East for the Infiniti Q50. With its classy interior and impressive performance, Q50 will give drivers an air of exclusivity in an environment dominated by the German car makers. Standard equipment includes dual-zone climate control, DAB Radio, Bluetooth connectivity, rear view camera, leather interior and heated seats, all available in Premium trim level.

With the 2.2L 167bhp diesel engine, the Q50 can offer 64mpg and emissions at 114g/km at the attractive price of £30,350 although it has to be said that at 500L capacity, the boot isn’t up there with the leaders. On the other hand this car will stand out amongst the usual suspects.

5. Lexus GS

The opposition from Japan comes in the form of the Lexus GS. Like its rival counterpart the GS will have to compete against the top echelon of premium cars. The boot is a tad disappointing at just 450L but the car has other virtues to offer. There are three models to choose from: for economy reasons we should dismiss the V6 petrol engine - desirable for performance reasons though it is - and also the more powerful petrol-electric hybrid GS 450h. To support the low running costs premise we’ve opted for the GS 300h SE CVT Automatic.

As the name suggests, it’s a hybrid and it is no lightweight. Fortunately when both battery and petrol engine are combined the GS delivers 220bhp yet maintains a low CO² figure of just 109g/km. Drive comes courtesy of a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) which feels different at first and the final decision on that will be a personal choice. Standard features include 17-inch alloys, front and rear parking sensors, cruise, DAB, Bluetooth connectivity and a massive eight inch colour infotainment screen. Dare to be different for £31,495.

6. Maserati Ghibli

Arriving back in Europe the latest Maserati Ghibli has recently hit the UK showrooms. The Italian manufacturer has always made cars that are objects of desire and the Ghibli is no exception. Fortunately they have also entered a new era of reliability and build quality. It is also the first from this car maker to have the option of a diesel engine which is our choice here.

You can of course choose from one of two twin-turbo V6 petrol engines but the economical choice will always be the 271bhp 3.0L single turbo V6 diesel auto that is reputed to be the most powerful of its type in the car market sprinting to 62mph in just 6.3 seconds. Obviously there has to be a penalty and the Ghibli will only deliver a lower 47mpg whilst emissions are up to 158g/km. It’s to be expected. Boot space is average at 500L but you do get luxurious leather, Bluetooth and navigation as standard. This car is the most expensive on the list at an eye-watering £49,160 but what price exclusivity?

7. Volvo S8 D4 SE Nav

Given its recent troubled history, the familiar Swedish name of Volvo may not immediately spring to mind. Nevertheless, the Volvo S80 D4 SE Nav comes from a company that prides itself on the efficiency of its engines and its unrivalled safety record.

With the lowest emissions here (104g/km), and the best fuel economy (70.6mpg) from the 178bhp D4 diesel engine, the S80 makes a compelling and attractive alternative choice. Features previously described are here too as is 480L boot and, interestingly, an internet-based multimedia system, which allows browsing and music streaming. All this Swedish delight for £32,220.

8. Mercedes Benz E-Class

Going full circle and we are back in Germany with the Mercedes Benz E-Class which has always been a best-seller and is the company’s solution to the premium car question. The last model was perhaps a bit too busy but with the latest incarnation Mercedes are back into their stride.

Buyers have always expected top quality from the three-pointed star. The E220 BlueTEC SE 2.1L diesel (168bhp) does what Mercedes does best – comfort and safety. Fuel economy at 61.4mpg and CO2 emissions of 119g/km are good, and the standard equipment is outstanding with sat-nav, Bluetooth connectivity, DAB Radio, leather upholstery and a 540L boot as standard. German precision.

So there you have it. All the cars have their merits; all have something special to offer. Over to you.

Personalised License Plates & What To Do With Your Old Numbers

$
0
0
Personalised license plates are everywhere. From street to street and city to city, anywhere there are cars there are those willing to take their love of automobiles to a new level. No doubt you will have spotted a number in your daily life, and even more online, reacting with chuckles or admiration.

The custom license plate is seen as something of a statement item. Your choice of letters and numbers is as individual as your haircut, giving passers by a window into who you are. Unique plates, like car mods, are treats for car enthusiasts. But how to do you pick a plate that doesn’t make someone cringe and what do you do with your old one once you upgrade?

Pick a vanity plate that doesn’t look tacky

There are three different kinds of custom plates: name, car make/model and dateless. For the average motorist the license plate means little more than how you car is identified. However, they’ll have an idea of how each license plate shows its own time of creation - the third and fourth number being the age of the vehicle.

Car enthusiasts, however, appreciate the more intricate details of their cars. The license plate may be a tool for the DVLA to identify your vehicle, but its also a potential place to put your personal stamp. Unfortunately, not everyone who decides to upgrade their number plate knows the difference between a cool and a tacky custom plate.

You’ll have seen them on the internet, the horrid “DA B3ST” number plates, which elicit groans from onlookers and costs more than a pretty penny. Avoid these at all costs by looking instead for a plate more in tune with who you are, such as initials or favourite numbers.

Look for matching make or model license plates

Personal registration specialists, Click4Reg suggest that “for those who love their cars but prefer to avoid using their names or initials we suggest checking out some of the affordable make or model plates, ones that end in SLK or BMW are desirable but not extortionate”.

If you have multiple cars or a higher end collection, co-ordinating your vanity plates with your vehicles could be a great finishing touch.

Alternatively, if you’re really keen to get your initials on your pride and joy then its worth doing some research or speaking to a specialist about the popularity of your initials. Chances are that, in the UK, there won’t be someone else with the same initials as you wanting custom plates.

If your initials are popular then the cost of the plate can rise considerably. In this instance, you might want to mix in your initials with numbers, like your year of birth. If you do this though, watch out for misrepresenting the age of your car should you be planning to sell one day. Remember the age of your car is typically in the 3rd and 4th number position and you don’t want to make your car look older than it is.

Sell on your old plate to make money

Once you have your personalised license, what do you do with your old number plate? One of the simplest solutions is to transfer it to another vehicle that you own. But if you just want to get rid of the extra plate, consider selling it on.

License plates, notably personalised ones, come with a value and can be sold on. You license plate might not mean anything to you but the combination of letters and number may be significant to someone else. Something they are willing to pay for.

This is also something to bear in mind when purchasing your personalised license plates. Going for a more desirable plate is an investment and there are many people around the world who collect the most wanted plate. For example, in November 2014, a registration plate sold for £500,000 in Wales.

Lamborghini Sesto Elemento - Super Cool Concept Car!

Showcasing pictures and videos of the super cool concept car, the Lamborghini Sesto Elemento. Revealed at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, this Lambo is known as the Sixth Element Concept in English, the concept will boast advanced carbon-fibre construction technology which allows for a total curb weight of 999kg. Estimated cost is a cool $3.44 million

This concept signals Lambo's intention to withdraw from the Top Speed War which the world's supercar makers have been embroiled in for some time, and instead focus on something much more doable - power-to-weight.

As such, this Sesto Elemento gets the Gallardo's 5.2-litre V10 wrung out to 562bhp, but sits on a carbon-fibre body weighing a paltry 999kgs, meaning rocket-powered performance in a go-kart shell. 0-62mph is sliced in just 2.5 seconds, which, as you've guessed, is the same as a friggin' Veyron. Top speed is 'over 186mph'.

But, says Lambo, "what the figures cannot convey is the Sesto Elemento's razor-sharp handling, voracious turn-in and huge braking power". An understanding of basic physics will tell you this is right. So, so Right.

Lamborghini Sesto Elemento Videos
Here's some cool videos of the Lamborghini Sesto Elemento at the Paris 2010 Motor Show

Lamborghini Sesto Elemento Engine
5.2-litre V10 engine from the Lamborghini Gallardo LP 570-4 Superleggera which sports 419kW with permanent all-wheel-drive. Because of the overall weight of under one tonne, the 0-100km/h time amounts to 2.5 seconds where the top speed is 300km/h.

The Sesto element Concept from Lamborghini is meant to represent the sixth element in the periodic table and that is occupied by the element carbon. The total weight of the concept is 999 kg which translates into a healthy 2,202 lb. This weight is inclusive of the engine unit which is a V10 and also the all wheel drive transmission. The V10 delivers 570 hp and accelerates the car from 0 to 100 kmph in just 2.5 seconds which is the same for the Gallardo Superleggera. The top speed of the concept is well over 300 kmph or 200 mph.

The car is supposed to have perfect aerodynamics as per the cars maker. The ribs up front, two of them which helps to improve the stiffness of the component as well as in guiding the cool air directly to the radiator which is located behind them and to the brakes as well. Right beneath the front windscreen there are two red color triangular shaped openings. It is through these openings that the cool air is flowing.

For the rims it is made up of complete carbon fiber and incorporates a five spoke design. The interior of the car is also done up to a very minimal standard. Ergonomics has been attended to in the design of the steering wheel which can be adjusted both for height and reach. The pedals also can be adjusted longitudinally. There are just three switches embedded in the central console. These are piezoelectric ones and are to start the engine, throw the car into reveres gear and the third to switch on the lights.

The president and CEO of Automobili Lamborghini, Stephan Winkelmann had this to say of the Sesto Elemento: “The Lamborghini Sesto Elemento shows how the future of the super sports car can look – extreme lightweight engineering, combined with extreme performance results in extreme driving fun. We put all of our technological competence into one stunning form to create the Sesto Elemento.

Audi Old Spock battles New Spock - Coolest Car Commercial Ever

Leonard Nimoy sadly passed away this week. One of my favourite car adverts to date has got to be the Audi commercial from 2013, starring both Leonard Nimoy and Zachary Quinto. It's got two Spocks, a dig at Mercedes, Leonard Nimoy swearing and best of all, an awesome impromptu rendition of the "The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins" by Leonard Nimoy. Brilliant.

Live long and prosper!

Cars Of The FA Cup Stars

The FA Cup semi-finals 2015 to be played this weekend will by no means be the most thrilling stage of this year’s competition. Current holders Arsenal take on Championship side Reading in the first match (Saturday, 18th April) before Liverpool face a rejuvenated, but still relegation-threatened, Aston Villa in Sunday’s tie.

The bookies are (naturally) expecting an Arsenal vs Liverpool final, which would fall on May 30th – the birthday of retiring captain Steven Gerrard. However, despite Tim Sherwood’s claims that the FA Cup is “unimportant” compared to top flight survival, he would surely like to crown a first season at Villa Park with silverware.

The good news is however that the semi-finals will boast a lot of players with excellent taste in cars. For this article, where we examine the supercars of footballing millionaires, we are indebted to Liverpool for knocking out Blackburn Rovers in their 6th round replay; as this article would be somewhat shorter had they progressed instead!

Arsenal - Ferrari 458

The Ferrari 458 seems to have become the “team car” of Gunners players, with at least three known to own one including Mesut Ozil, Theo Walcott and Jack Wilshere. The 448 Speciale has a top speed of 202 MPH and will achieve 0-60 in 3.0 seconds - enough to even leave the notoriously pacy Walcott gobsmacked!

What’s more, the 458 is simply a beautiful machine; its bodywork so sculpted and aerodynamically perfect you might worry about being sliced by the car’s wake if it passed too quickly.

While we can’t understand why seemingly the entire Arsenal 1st team squad would plump for the same supercar, we concede they’ve made a fine choice.

Gabby Agbonlahor (Aston Villa) - Lamborghini Gallardo

The 458 may scream style, but the Gallardo puts out an altogether different vibe – raw power. Lamborghini's best ever selling car will hit 100km/h in 3.6 seconds and look damn fine whilst doing so.

All footballers everywhere: Range Rover Sport

Many decry the Range Rover as an obnoxious accessory owned by crass vulgarians. I happen to disagree. For one, what car do you own if you’re excessively rich but incapable of controlling a supercar – step up the Range Rover. Also, you’d feel a lot more comfortable navigating hordes of paparazzi if your vehicle were built like a light battle tank.

Glen Johnson (Liverpool) - Aston Martin DB9

The DB9 is understated British excellence wrapped up in a beautifully sleek cocoon. The perfect car then for Liverpool right-back Glen Johnson whose excellent performances for club and country are overlooked more often than not.

Honourable mention: Mark Wright (Liverpool) - Volkswagen Passat Estate

The era of “mega money” football may have started with the Sky TV deal in 2002, but don’t let anyone fool you into thinking footballers were poorly off before then. In the early 1990s the Anfield parking ground would fill with Porsches, Mercedes and Land Rovers - with the addition of a particularly ugly estate car.

Some assumed the beaten up Volkswagen Passat belonged to a cleaner, but it was actually the property of Liverpool defender Mark Wright, who treasured it for years.

Though envy is a natural reaction to the incredible lives footballers lead, Wright gains a lot of kudos for showing you don’t need to splash the cash to be taken seriously!

1968 Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale

The Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale is an extremely rare and cool road car built by Alfa Romeo. Only 18 are reported to have been made, plus three design studies based on the 33 Stradale the 33.2, Iguana and Carabo.

The Stradale, first built in 1967, was based on the Autodelta Alfa Romeo T33 racing car. The car, designed by Franco Scaglione, and built by Carrozzeria Marazzi, made its debut at the 1967 Turin Motorshow.

Built in an attempt by Alfa to make some of its racing technology available to the public, it was the most expensive automobile for sale to the public in 1968 at US$17,000 (when the average cost of a new car in 1968 was $2,822).

The Stradale is believed to be the first production vehicle to feature dihedral doors, also known as butterfly doors. The Stradale also features windows which seamlessly curve upward into the 'roof' of the vehicle.

The race-bred engine bore no relation to the mass-produced units in Alfa's more mainstream vehicles. Race engineer Carlo Chiti designed an oversquare (78 mm bore x 52,2 mm stroke) dry-sump lubricated 1,995 cc (121.7 cu in) V8 that featured SPICA fuel injection, four ignition coils and 16 spark plugs. The engine used four chain-driven camshafts to operate the valve train and had a rev-limit of 10000 rpm. The engine produced 230 bhp (172 kW) at 8800 rpm in road trim and 270 bhp (200 kW) in race trim.

In another break from convention, Alfa used a six-speed transaxle gearbox by Valerio Colotti. The car takes 5.5 seconds to reach 60 mph (96.56 km/h) from a standing start and has top speed of 260 km/h (160 mph
